Our Principal initially trained as an Architectural Technician, but soon after Mark completed a Building Surveying honours degree at De Montfort University. Mark became MRICS qualified in 1987, and then moved onto achieving an RICS Conservation Diploma in 1995, with the intent to be able to work with our Heritage buildings.

Mark's portfolio of work experience previously focussed on large national roll-out contracts in the residential, telecommunication, retail and brewery industries. His clients included: Wetherspoon to oversee Architects and Contractors in nationwide multi-million-pound fit outs; Vodafone to design and instigate store fit outs nationwide. His work for private clients involved Listed Building and Conservation Area sites; and landlords to maintain and adapt large scale listed buildings in Kensington, Fulham and Chelsea.

Over the years, Mark has seen aesthetically good design by others which was fundamentally flawed by poor use of materials, leading to extensive maintenance and costs. As a consequence, he developed a passion for good design via the practical use of the best materials. This philosophy applies to new vernacular style bespoke homes and extensions, as well as particularly to the conservation of our heritage assets. Mark's wealth of practical knowledge gleaned over 35 years adds exceptional value to each project, no matter how small or large the engagement.

Outside of work Mark's interests include immersing in marine life and knowledge, as well as being a keen endurance cyclist, completing the Tour de France route for charity in 2014.

Ruth joined Battram Associates in 2025 as a Building Surveyor, bringing a strong passion for heritage and conservation. She graduated from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, with a degree in Building Surveying in 2012 and became a chartered member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in 2017. Pursuing her interest in the historic environment, Ruth achieved RICS conservation accreditation in 2020. In 2023, she was shortlisted for RICS Building Surveyor of the Year, and in 2024 she became a full member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC).

Since joining the team, Ruth has focused on the conservation and management of heritage assets and listed buildings. She is particularly committed to sensitive interventions that respect the character and significance of each property, ensuring appropriate materials and techniques are used. Her work encompasses building surveys, conservation advice, heritage statements, quinquennial inspections, and project management.

Ruth's approach is shaped by a genuine enthusiasm for historic properties and a belief that careful, thoughtful conservation can extend the life and beauty of these important buildings. Outside of work, Ruth is a keen runner and enjoys exploring the Chilterns and surrounding countryside.

With an education in Law and a background in teaching, Alison joined Battram Associates in 2019.

Alison completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Building Surveying (RICS accredited) with the University of Salford and is nearing completion of the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) to become Chartered with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Alison's law degree provides a strong foundation in legal aspects related to property, construction and contracts. Alison has wide ranging experience including party wall matters, heritage statements, listed building consents, building surveys, quinquennial specifications and planning issues.

Alison has a range of experience in contract administration. This includes assisting with the preparation of planning applications, navigating the complexities of building regulations, managing the contractual aspects of building projects, cost valuations, instructing contractors and advising clients throughout the project. She is adept at drafting, reviewing and administering contracts, ensuring projects stay within scope, budget and timeline while adhering to legal and technical requirements.

Alison is particularly interested in the conservation of historic churches, ensuring sensitive, appropriate repairs using traditional techniques.

When not at work, Alison is an avid reader with a mission to find the best coffee and almond croissant in the south east.

Amelia joined Battram Associates in 2012 as an Architectural Technician, developing a strong foundation in technical design, construction methods and the delivery of detailed architectural drawing packages. Over the years, her role has evolved increasingly towards architectural design, taking on more complex projects and working closely with clients from the early stages of a project through to the development of considered design proposals.

Alongside her professional experience, Amelia has continued to develop academically, achieving a First Class BA (Hons) Architecture and RIBA Part 1 qualification. Combining her architectural education with more than a decade of practical industry experience gives her a strong understanding of both the creative and technical aspects of the design process.

As Design Lead for The Design Studio, Amelia works with clients to understand not only what they want to achieve, but how they want their homes and spaces to feel and function. Her approach balances aesthetics with practicality, developing individual design solutions that respond to the way clients live while respecting the character and context of each property.

Collaboration is central to Amelia's approach. Working closely with clients, Mark and the wider Battram Associates team allows architectural design, technical knowledge and surveying expertise to come together throughout the project.

Outside of the studio, Amelia enjoys spending time outdoors with her family and exploring the surrounding countryside on long runs.
