Battram Associates are an independent, Building Surveying and design led practice based in Tring and Berkhamsted with the capability and local experience to cover the northern Home Counties. We have extensive knowledge of local vernacular residential design, materials, and a thorough understanding of planning policies and associated legislation.
We provide a high quality service with reports written in plain English providing common sense advice. We will ensure that you, as our client, have a full and thorough understanding of the technical issues highlighted. All our reports are prepared by a Chartered Building Surveyor with extensive experience.

Our Designers are experts in managing the complete design and build process, from dealing with issues arising from planning and listed buildings to instructing works on site. We understand that quality, cost and time are the key components of any successful project, and careful management of these allows us to provide a smooth and reliable process from initial sketches to completion of the works. Battram Associates have a wealth of experience and our Principal Mark Battram has 35 years post qualification experience in the core activities this firm continues to undertake.
Meet the Team
Principal
Mark Battram
Our Principal initially trained as an Architectural Technician, but soon after Mark completed a Building Surveying honors degree at De Montfort University. Mark became MRICS qualified in 1987, and then moved onto achieving an RICS Conservation Diploma in 1995, with the intent to be able to work with our Heritage buildings..
Marks portfolio of work experience previously focussed on large national roll-out contracts in the residential, telecommunication, retail and brewery industries - for Clients including:
- Weatherspoon - overseeing Architects and Contractors in nationwide multi-million pound fit outs
- Vodafone – designing and instigating store fit outs nationwide and particularly involved in Listed Building and Conservation Area sites.
- Wealthy Private Landlords – maintaining and adapting large scale listed buildings in Kensington, Fulham, and Chelsea
Circa 25 years ago Mark founded a sole trader business, after gleaning a wealth of surveying, design, and project management skill sets . Over time, the focus of the business shifted to further projects in London and locally in the Home counties, reigning back on the need to work nationwide – a decision made to concentrate locally and this has led to a good network of consultants and Contractors, that all form part of the “team” in Client projects.
Mark has over the years seen aesthetically good design by others that has been fundamentally flawed by poor use of materials, leading to extensive maintenance and costs. He has therefore developed a passion for good design via the practical use of the best materials. This philosophy applies for new Vernacular style bespoke homes, and extensions as well as particularly in the conservation of our Heritage assets. Marks wealth of practical knowledge gleaned over 35 years adds exceptional value to each project, no matter how small or large the engagement.
Outside of work Marks interests include immersing in marine life and knowledge as well as being a keen endurance cyclist – completing in 2014 the Tour de France route for charity.
Surveyor
Alison Ingles
With an education in Law and a background in teaching, Alison joined Battram Associates in 2019.
Alison completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Building Surveying (RICS accredited) with the University of Salford and is nearing completion of the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) to become Chartered with the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
Alison’s’ law degree, provides a strong foundation in legal aspects related to property, construction, and contracts.
Alison has wide ranging experience including party wall matters, heritage statements, building surveys, quinquennials specifications and planning issues.
Particularly interested in the conservation of historic churches, Alison ensures sensitive appropriate repairs use traditional techniques.
Alison has experience in contract administration. This includes assisting with the preparation of planning applications, navigating the complexities of building regulations, and managing the contractual aspects of building projects. She is adept at drafting, reviewing, and administering contracts, ensuring projects stay within scope, budget, and timeline while adhering to legal and technical requirements.
When not at work, Alison is an avid reader with a mission to find the best coffee and almond croissant in the south east.
Architectural Designer
Amelia Edwards
Amelia started working with Battram Associates back in 2012 as an Architectural Technician where she honed her skills in creating detailed technical drawings and various design tasks. This role provided her with a solid foundation in Architectural principles, construction methods, and the use of design software.
Through dedication and a passion for design, she took on increasingly complex projects, which allowed her to develop a deeper understanding of the architectural process.
As she gained experience, she transitioned into more creative roles, collaborating closely with clients to understand their needs and translating their visions into functional and aesthetically pleasing designs. Her journey from design technician to architectural designer has been driven by a commitment to excellence, continuous learning, and a desire to create spaces that enhance the lives of their occupants.
Amelia is passionate about working with clients to create and enhance the function and aesthetics of their spaces. Her expertise lies in developing innovative design solutions that are both practical and visually appealing. She is committed to staying current with industry trends and advancements, continuously seeking to improve her skills and knowledge.
Amelia's design philosophy centers around the belief that Architecture should not only be beautiful but also functional and sustainable. Collaboration and communication are key to her process, ensuring that every project is a true reflection of the client's needs and aspirations.
When not at work, Amelia enjoys getting out in the surrounding countryside on long runs.
Surveyor
Ruth Mitchell
Ruth joined Battram Associates in 2025 as a Building Surveyor, bringing a strong passion for heritage and conservation. She graduated from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, with a degree in Building Surveying in 2012 and became a chartered member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in 2017. Pursuing her interest in the historic environment, Ruth achieved RICS conservation accreditation in 2020. In 2023, she was shortlisted for RICS Building Surveyor of the Year, and in 2024 she became a full member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC).
Since joining the team, Ruth has focused on the conservation and management of heritage assets and listed buildings. She is particularly committed to sensitive interventions that respect the character and significance of each property, ensuring appropriate materials and techniques are used. Her work encompasses building surveys, conservation advice, heritage statements, quinquennial inspections, and project management.
Ruth’s approach is shaped by a genuine enthusiasm for historic properties and a belief that careful, thoughtful conservation can extend the life and beauty of these important buildings.
Outside of work, Ruth is a keen runner and enjoys exploring the Chilterns and surrounding countryside.
